1. The Three Numbering Families

Before you cross anything, identify what you are holding. Most bad interchanges start here, with a number of unknown type treated as if its type were obvious.

OE numbers

The reference the vehicle manufacturer assigns to the part as fitted at the factory. This is the anchor every other number points back to, and the only one issued by the party that decided what the vehicle would carry.

Two properties drive everyday work. One OE number is typically covered by many aftermarket and reman numbers, so looking outward from the OE the relationship is one-to-many. And OE numbers supersede: when a part is revised, the manufacturer issues a new number, the old one survives in search results and legacy catalogs, and a buyer who stops at the old number may conclude a part is discontinued when it has simply been renumbered.

Formats identify the issuer, which is useful when a supplier quotes a bare number. Toyota runs 44610-XXXXX. GM uses numeric strings such as 15276502. Ford uses alphanumerics like 6E5Z-2005-C. Volkswagen Group uses the 5Q1 614 106 X pattern.

Cardone numbers

This family causes the most confusion, so be precise about what it is. Cardone numbers are the internal part-numbering scheme of CARDONE Industries, founded in 1970 by Michael Cardone, Sr. and Michael Cardone, Jr. in a North Philadelphia storefront, originally rebuilding windshield wiper motors (CARDONE history).

Start by separating condition from brand. CARDONE markets both remanufactured and newly manufactured brake boosters, including 5C-series new Hydro-Boost applications. The brand name on a listing does not tell you which you are looking at. Product condition has to be read off the exact part number and its listing, and it decides whether a core charge applies and whether reman grouping logic is even relevant.

For the remanufactured lines, the process starts from a returned core: used units are disassembled, cleaned, worn components replaced, and function restored, with reverse engineering in which original design weaknesses are identified, corrected and where applicable upgraded (CARDONE, 53-5412; RockAuto spec).

The grouping behaviour described below belongs to those remanufactured lines. A single Cardone number frequently collects several OE references under one service part. The CARDONE 538814 power brake booster lists six OE interchange numbers under one code: 5Q1614106B, 5Q1614106C, 5Q1614106K, 5Q1614106L, 5Q1614106Q and 5Q1614106R (RockAuto).

That is aggregation on a remanufactured line, and aggregation runs one way. Landing on a Cardone number from any of those six OE numbers is easy. Going back the other way, from the Cardone number to the OE variant your vehicle actually needs, requires information the Cardone number does not contain.

Cardone numbers also carry package specificity that model names do not. The CARDONE 54-71050 is listed as fitting models with the JB5 GM brake code (Summit Racing). Brake code, not nameplate.

Read the prefix loosely. The 53- and 54- style prefixes denote a category inside Cardone's own scheme; treat the full number as the identifier and take fitment from the published interchange list rather than from the prefix.

One commercial characteristic belongs here too. Cores are used parts returned to the remanufacturer instead of being scrapped (CARDONE), which means core deposits and return logistics sit inside the landed cost of any reman program. That affects your margin, not your fitment.

Aftermarket numbers

Every independent manufacturer assigns its own numbers to its own production. These map to OE in many-to-many relationships: one OE number covered by a dozen brands, one aftermarket number sometimes covering several OE numbers where the supplier consolidated applications.

2. Default Evidence Priority for Application Identification

Not all confirmations are worth the same. This is the part most cross-reference guides skip, and it is the part that decides whether your process actually converges on the right part or just accumulates agreeing catalogs.

One scoping note before the list. What follows ranks evidence for which part the vehicle takes. Physical conformance of what actually gets delivered is a parallel approval question, governed by the controlled drawing, the written specification and the approved sample, and it does not sit under the catalog evidence above it.

For identification, rank your evidence like this:

  1. OEM electronic parts catalog and supersession data. The manufacturer's own record of what the vehicle carried and what supersedes it.
  2. Vehicle build data: option codes, RPO or PR codes, brake code, production date. What that specific unit was actually assembled with.
  3. The physical part and an approved drawing. Measured, not described.
  4. A supplier's controlled fitment record. Structured data the supplier maintains and can be held to.
  5. Aftermarket and reman interchange. Useful corroboration. Not proof.

The trap in the middle of that list is worth naming. Two catalogs agreeing is not two pieces of evidence if both bought their data from the same aggregator, copied an older catalog, or inherited the same error. Independent confirmation means independent origin, and most online parts data is less independent than it looks. When two sources agree, ask where each got it before you count the agreement.

For every mapping you rely on commercially, record four things: the source, the date you retrieved it, the revision it belongs to, and how confident you are. That record is what lets you re-audit a bad shipment instead of re-deriving the whole chain from memory.

Where the VIN sits

The VIN belongs at the top of the workflow and nowhere near the bottom of the evidence stack. It is the entry point that tells you which vehicle you are talking about, and it is routinely oversold as though it returned a complete build sheet.

NHTSA's own decoder is explicit about its limits. The information it displays is reported by the manufacturer, and for further questions the site directs you to contact the vehicle manufacturer, adding that more information may be available on a label affixed to the vehicle (NHTSA vPIC). A general decoder is not an OEM parts catalog. Brake packages, GVWR variants, RPO and PR codes, mid-year production breaks and master-cylinder interface differences frequently are not in it.

So: decode the VIN to identify the vehicle, then take the configuration question to OEM parts data, the build label, or the manufacturer. Treating the decode as the answer is how a buyer ends up confidently ordering the wrong brake package.

3. Where Number Matching Breaks

Five recurring failure patterns show up in this category. None of them means the numbering systems are broken. All of them mean a step was skipped.

The transposed digit

A part number is a character string and a single flip lands you on a different part. 44610-16300 is not 44610-13600. A tired transcription or a smudged casting is enough.

Read the number back. Confirm it against a second physical source: the part itself, the original invoice, a decode. Never place a production order from one handwritten transcription.

The ignored supersession

The old number persists in search results and legacy catalogs while current production carries a new code. A buyer who searches the obsolete number and concludes the part is discontinued has missed a supersession, and one who quotes against it is quoting a part nobody builds any more. Follow the chain to the current number before you decide anything about availability.

The grouped reman number used to buy new

Where a remanufactured Cardone number collects several OE references under one service part, it identifies a reman service decision rather than a manufacturer's part identity. That decision belongs to the remanufacturer and applies to their unit.

Take that same Cardone number to a different supplier for a new part and the grouping does not travel with it. The new supplier may not consolidate the same variants, or may consolidate a different set. Resolve the Cardone number down to the specific OE number your configuration needs before ordering new stock. Skipping that step is one common way a correct-looking interchange produces a wrong box.

The brake-package variant

A model name is not a brake specification. A pickup sold under one name across several model years may have carried two or three engines, multiple cab configurations and distinct brake packages, and the booster follows the brake code rather than the nameplate. The CARDONE 54-71050 is specified against the JB5 GM brake code for exactly this reason (Summit Racing).

Ordering "a Silverado booster" leaves fitment to chance. Require the brake package or RPO code on any platform known to have variants.

The casting number read as a service number

Boosters carry stamped and cast marks, and not all of them are OE part numbers. Some identify the raw casting, the tooling or an internal foundry code and appear in no interchange catalog anywhere. Cardone's own guidance points at the layering: most boosters carry a pedal rod identification number stamped on the rod, separate from anything on the shell (CARDONE).

When a number's identity is uncertain, establish which family it belongs to before you cross it. A number you cannot classify is not evidence.

4. What Varies Physically Under a Matching Number

The reason a checked interchange still needs a dimensional confirmation is that an application is a range of vehicles, not one object. Four dimensions do most of the damage.

Pushrod length is the quiet one. The rod connects the booster to the pedal on the input side and to the master cylinder on the output side, and a few millimetres changes pedal free play, master cylinder preload and brake-light switch release. Wrong length and the brakes drag, the pedal sits low, or the stop lamps stay on. Owner-community documentation for the C3 Corvette records the pattern clearly: the 1977-1982 booster uses a shorter master-cylinder pushrod for a shallower bore, while the 1968-1976 unit uses a longer rod for a deeper one (Corvette Forum). That is a community source rather than an OEM manual, and it is cited here as an illustration of a documented production break, not as a specification.

Firewall stud pattern varies by platform and brake package. Dimensionally perfect everywhere else and wrong on the stud spread means drilling, which is not acceptable on a safety part in a wholesale replacement context.

Diaphragm configuration separates single-diaphragm units from dual-diaphragm units that stack two smaller diaphragms to reach a higher assist ratio in a shorter package. Different envelope, different ratio, not interchangeable.

Production-date breaks put two vehicles of the same year, make and model on different components depending on build date. When an interchange lands near a known transition, ask the supplier directly whether the unit covers the full year range or whether there is a date break. A supplier with engineering depth will know without checking.
